Maintaining Healthy Breasts

To keep breast health priority #1 in maintaining healthy breasts, we recommend these things that will increase your chances for healthy breasts, but will also help to eliminate breast pain:

Limit alcohol.

The more alcohol you drink, the greater your risk of developing breast cancer. The general recommendation — based on research on the effect of alcohol on breast cancer risk — is to limit yourself to no more than one drink a day, as even small amounts increase your risk.

Maintain a healthy weight.

If your weight is healthy, work to maintain that weight. If you need to lose weight, ask your doctor about strategies to accomplish this. Reduce the number of calories you eat each day and slowly increase the amount of exercise. One of the ways to accomplish that is by moving more! Physical activity can help you maintain a healthy weight, which helps prevent breast cancer. Try to aim for at least 150 minutes a week of moderate aerobic activity or 75 minutes of vigorous aerobic activity weekly, plus strength training at least twice a week.

Breast-feed.

Breast-feeding might play a role in breast cancer prevention. The longer you breast-feed, the greater the protective effect.

Self-examination.

Have regular mammograms.

For women between the ages of 40 to 50: a mammogram every year after consultation with their doctor. For women above the age of 50: a mammogram once every two years. Please consult your physician for mammogram cycles if you have breast cancer in your family history.

Quit smoking.

Quit smoking, if you haven’t already. The risk of many cancers, including breast cancer, and other health problems increases if you smoke.

Watch for these breast cancer signs.

Early detection saves lives. When breast cancer is detected early, there are more treatment options. Please consult your physician if you develop any of these signs or symptoms:

• Swelling on a part of the breast or underarm;
• A previously protruding nipple that becomes inverted;
• A persistent rash at the nipple or areola;
• Bloodstained discharge from the nipple; and
• A change in the size or shape of the breast
